Tuesday morning I woke up to what sounded like a huge gun shot.
I looked out my bedroom window to see a giant whole in the world
trade center with flames and smoke engulfing the top. Without a TV
or radio, I had no idea what was going on.
It was while on the phone with a friend that I saw the second plane
turn and fly directly into the other building.
From my bedroom window I watched both buildings collapse. Today,
downtown is covered in smoke and soot. It smells like burnt rubber--but
we don't really know what it is that we are breathing. My thoughts are
with the families who are now walking the streets with photographs,
looking for their loved ones. I am also thinking about the hundreds of
Dress for Success clients who worked at Morgan Stanley Dean Witter
and other companies in those buildings as secretaries and
receptionists. So many of them were single moms. I hope that they got
out in time, but we won't know for weeks...
These past two days our NYPD, FDNY, and Mayor have been the greatest
leaders a city could ever hope to have at the helm. And, New Yorkers
have poured into the streets with water, food, dry socks--and I stood
among thousands yesterday in line for 4 hours to give blood at
St. Vincent's Hospital. This is a tremendous city. I love New York and
the people who live here. My thoughts and prayers are
with those individuals and families who were inside, and especially
those who are waiting at home for news.
