betty, Your Web page is full of fascinating stories of mountaineers and other real people. Flavie Ellison's narrative of his Vietnam experiences moved me enormously. Those experiences happened to many men but he describes them so effectively. You have caught his life in a snapshot that we all should see. Hope you'll record many more histories like his. Betty,

You've assembled a colorful collection of stories, portraits, and directory resources celebrating the cultural heritage of the region. Especially valuable are the oral histories -- lots of time and effort to record, and obviously a labor of love. Thank you!!

After 21 years in the Navy, the mountains just seemed too close together so now I live in Virginia. It was nice reminiscing. Thank you! Okey Copley

I enjoyed all your web site but the interview with Mr. Mick touched me. You see he was my number one favorite teacher. I remember being in his 1st period class in the mornings after working till 2 am at the theater. I got B's in his class and was I tired. He was a gifted teacher and I can still picture him in his class room. Rev. Jim Mullins..Oh by the way, my pictures are in the Mcdowell County, WV web site where I am baptizing folks at age 14. And also where I am motion picture projectionist at the War, WV theaters in early 1950's. I suppose I was WV youngest Motion Picture Projectionist.

I am very interested in my roots. My parents were born and raised in Jackson, Ohio. I am concerned about Appalachians who try to make it in the city and stuggle. I worked for the county children services agency here for 17 years. Although they consider Appalachian culture a minority, it is a joke; not for educational reasons, financial help, etc. When I informed an Administrator that she was born and raised in Appalachia she asked, "Who set those boundaries?" The Director laughed at a joke in the paper about the funding for education (and he was raised in Appalachia). Another female administrator said that she didn't want to talk about her Appalachian heritage. It became very clear to me that Appalachians who had "succeeded", did not want to claim their heritage, therefore, were not sensitive to problems of the Appalachian people who have migrated to this large city of Columbus, Ohio. I recently served on a jury (a capital murder trial). The defendant was of Appalachian descent. The female, African-American defense attorney was appalled by the way he and his family were treated by the courts. Because they were poor, uneducated, white people. I told her I've known about the discrimination of whites by whites for years. They are no different than the many African Americans who end up doing criminal things largely due to their lack of education, lack of money, etc.

I loved the story of Giulia Ferrante Zando in War. I graduated from Big Creek High School and I am now living in Naples, Italy. I've taken the ferry to Ischia and it is a lovely island. Is Giulia still alive? Does anyone know? I would love to give her or some relatives pictures of the island. I will be returning to my home in Florida soon but I still visit McDowell County to visit relatives. This was a great site.
